HISTORY The Alaska Youth and Parent Foundation (AYPF) is a non-profit, United Way Agency dedicated to serving the needs of runaway and homeless adolescents and their families. AYPF was initially funded and incorporated in 1972 with Youth Development and Delinquency Prevention Act (H.E.W.) funds. The agency mandate was to provide legal information, advocacy and counseling services to youth at risk. In 1974, AYPF received its own direct funding through a grant from the Criminal Justice Planning Agency, a state agency under the Office of the Governor and controlled by the Governor's Commission on the Administration of Justice. In 1987, AYPF introduced Project Safe Place to Alaska. AYPF had almost 60 employees and operated two residential child care facilities offering mental health services for homeless, runaway and seriously emotionally disturbed youth. We provide a variety of outpatient clinical mental health services, facilitate an anti-theft class and offered an electronic monitoring program for juvenile offenders. Our POWER program trains teens to be peer counselors and do outreach to teens on issues like health and safety, and do referrals to available resources and social services. We produce for sale, publications on law relating to teens and on resources for teens. In FY04 we served over 6,500 youth and their families and foster parents. In FY04-05 residential services and outpatient services were closed, leaving one program, the POWER Program, to serve youth. In FY05 we served over 6,000 homeless, runaway or troubled youth through the POWER program.
MISSION The mission of Alaska Youth & Parent Foundation is to advocate for and foster the safety and well-being of youth at risk so they may lead productive lives. |
